Win95 Configuration for Internet
---

The following document presents the often confusing process of configuring a Windows95 workstation for access to an internet provider. If you have additional problems contact your internet service provider for differences. The following are comprehensive instructions on getting Win95 to connect to your Internet Service Provider (ISP) over a modem using SLIP/PPP.

Step #1 : Install Win95 Software Required
Microsoft Win95 Components to Install are: Dial-Up Networking, Dial-Up Adapter and TCP/IP. Always select OK to close a settings screen unless changes may not be made.

  • Install Dial-Up Networking, in Control Panel, Double-click Add/Remove Programs. Install Dial-Up Networking in Communications Section
  • Install TCP/IP, from Control Panel - Network - Add - Protocol - Add - Microsoft - TCP/IP.
  • Install Dial-Up Adapter, from Control Panel - Network - Add - Adapter - Add - Microsoft - Dial Up Adpater.
Step #2 : Install DSCRIPT
If you own Windows95 on Disk the DSCRIPT utility may not be included. Thus you may need to obtain it from Microsoft or an online service. You can install DSCRIPT by going to Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs - Windows Setup - Have Disk. Enter the CD-ROM Drive :\ADMIN\APPTOOLS\DSCRIPT and press OK. You will need to check the box next to the file BEFORE you click "Install", otherwise it will not get installed. Important point observed on some systems is that installing this may de-install other components such as Microsoft Backup or other utility programs in this particular Win95 Directory. May need to go back and make sure all the utility programs you want on your system are check marked in the ADD PROGRAM menu.

Step #3 : Make a DIAL-UP Entry
Find the Dial Up Networking Folder, Windows Setup puts it in Open Start - Programs - Accessories - Dial-Up Networking. Win95 will activate the Make New Connection wizard. Press Cancel for now. Select Connections (in the Dial-Up Networking folder menu) - Settings.

  • Enable "Redial" (retry = 99; 0 min 1 sec between retries).
  • Select "Don't prompt to use Dial-Up Networking"

Step #4 : Make New Connection Entry
Windows95 can auto determine your modem setting for you. Once the modem is setup you can modify those settings for each specific connection icon. Click on Make New Connection and setup the following parameters. Some of these parameters are under "Connection" and others are in "Options".

  • Enable "Wait for dial tone before dialing"
  • Disable "Cancel the call if not connected within 60 secs"
  • Enable "Disconnect a call if idle for more than 15 mins"
  • Click Next, enter the ISP's telephone access number when prompted (no area code, unless it is a long-distance call).
  • Click Next, enter a name for the dial-up entry (i.e. Provider Name).
  • Click Finish, A connect icon for the ISP will appear in the folder.

Step #5 : Connection Settings
Right-click on the connect icon. Select "Properties - Server Type". Select PPP from the drop-down menu. (this should be PPP by default)

  • Disable "Log on to network".
  • Disable "Enable Software Compression".
  • Disable "Require Encrypted Password".
  • Disable "NetBEUI" and "IPX/SPX Compatible".
  • Enable "TCP/IP Settings".
  • Click on "TCP/IP Settings".
  • Select "Server Assigned IP Address".
  • Select "Specify name server address".

Step #6 : Enter Internet Provider IP Addresses
Enter the IP address(es) of the various domains of the ISP, in my case Primary DNS is 204.122.16.31, Secondary is 204.122.16.98 or 204.122.16.4. Compuserve users Primary DNS is 149.174.211.5, and Secondary is 149.174.213.5.

Step #7 : Make a Login Script
DSCRIPT will handle this chore. Create a script from the samples show which will send out the proper terminal transmissions to login you on to your internet provider with name and password.

Step #8 : Configure Netscape or Explorer
Need to get these addresses from you Internet provider. As a sample mine are as follows.

   POP & SMTP : mail.eskimo.com
   NNTP News : eskinews.eskimo.com
   IRC : irc.eskimo.com, port 6664

Step #9 : Troubleshooting
If for some reason the connection did not work here is a quick list to go through and see if everything is setup properly.

Go to the Control Panel, and then Network. Highlight "TCP/IP" under "Installed Components", then click on "Properties". Go to "DNS Configuration", and make sure it is set to "DIS-able". Go to "IP Address", and make sure it is set to "obtain IP address automatically". Go to "Gateway", and make sure there are NO installed gateways.

If you had to make any of those changes, let your computer be rebooted when asked. Then, go to "Start - Programs - Accessories - Dial-up Networking", and right mouse click on the Internet Provider entry you have. Select "Properties", then "Server Type". Make sure that the ONLY option you have cheked is "TCP/IP", and the server type is set to "PPP Win95, WinNT, Internet". Click on "TCP/IP Settings", and make sure that you have the IP address set to "Server Assigned", and the DNS set to "Specify Domain name server addresses", with the proper Primary and Secondary Addresses. For example mine are: 204.122.16.31 and 204.122.16.98

The "IP Header compression" and "Use Default gateway on remote host" options should both be checked.

Also, go to "Start - Programs - Accessories - Dial-up Scripting Tool", and make sure that you have "Start terminal screen minimized" UN-checked. If you do not, please do so now, then hit "Apply". If you do NOT get a terminal window that pops up, where you can watch the login process go by after the modems connect, then you MUST reinstall the Scripting tool. After you are getting stable connections you can go back and check "Start terminal screen minimized" if you find it annoying.
